Abstract

Purpose

Geography is an exciting discipline involving the interrogation of place, space, and mobility. Film is too powerful and assessable tool that engages audiences. Therefore, this article builds a rationale for utilizing film in the teaching of geography. Particularly geographic mobility, which is the study of spatial patterns of movement and viewing them with positive or negative social meaning and as embedded within structures of power.

Design/methodology/approach

This is not a research paper so there is no methodology to detail.

Findings

This is not a research paper so there are no findings to detail.

Originality/value

The article introduces three films (Selma, Hidden Figures, and The Green Book) and describes how they can be used to enrich the teaching of geographic mobility.

Abstract

Purpose

Salespeople are at the forefront of the external environment where they act as the first responders to critical events and their resulting business turbulence. How the salesforce responds to turbulence is, therefore, of great interest both theoretically and in practice. The paper aims to rekindle interest in agility selling, which is the most adequate behavioral sales model to exploit environmental uncertainty.

Design/methodology/approach

An organizational autoethnography complemented with data from in-depth interviews with key salespeople involved in turbulence resulted in the development of eight case studies.

Findings

Salespeople use agility selling through four possible responsive roles. They amplify, innovate, cooperate or mitigate turbulence to exploit its ensuing opportunity or minimize its negative effect for both the supplier and the customer. The article enhances the agility selling model by putting three core abilities in the forefront: (1) forecasting turbulence from critical events, (2) responding to changes quickly and adequately and (3) exploiting changes as opportunities.

Research limitations/implications

The article argues that critical events are the cause of the turbulence that the salesforce must deal with before it hits the dyad. Agility selling represents an untapped research opportunity in business-to-business sales, and sales management, as well as within the overall agile organization.

Practical implications

Sales organizations would greatly benefit in implementing training of agility selling’s core abilities because responsiveness is a valuable tool for salespeople in times of turbulence.

Originality/value

The study is the first to empirically demonstrate the existence of agility selling.

Abstract

Manders Paints and Mander Kidd inks have been with us for a long time (since 1773 to be precise). Yet their image as far as the trade and technical press has been concerned has been that of a very low profile company, shunning the limelight and leaving it to others to shower us with press releases on the appointment of a new lab boy, or the fact that the canteen cat is dead, as well as genuine new developments. However, a recent visit made by this journal to Manders' Wolverhampton headquarters, based in the Mander Tower that dominates the centre of Wolverhampton, and also the Heath Town site that houses the Mander Kidd inks division and the decorative paints division, left us with the impression that Manders have done a lot of muscle flexing over the past eighteen months and that in the 1980s they will be offering keen competition in the paints and inks markets.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study was to learn lessons from North America on housing an ageing population, both in terms of supporting people to “age in place”, and available options for those who need/wish to move.

Design/methodology/approach

The project, funded by the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust, comprised a six‐week travel fellowship to the USA and Canada to meet with housing professionals from the public and private sectors and find out about best practice initiatives and efficient models for housing older people.

Findings

This report is written in two parts. This, the first, considers models which are successfully facilitating individuals and communities to support each other to age in place, for example, the Beacon Hill Village model which has taken off in the USA in a big way. Technology can, and will, also play an important role in enhancing the lives of older people in the future, but housing is really about people and it will be people who will make the real difference on this issue.

Originality/value

This was a unique opportunity to learn lessons from North America on how to effectively meet the needs of the older population, now and in the future.

Abstract

The paint and printing ink industries operate in a very competitive market, where raw materials and production costs account for a high proportion of the total price of the finished goods. Any method of reducing these processing costs or of obtaining better value from the raw materials must produce an immediate economic advantage allowing the manufacturer to improve his profit margin.

Abstract

An efficient corporate social responsibility (CSR) framework in many economies has been linked with human capital development, social and financial inclusion, environmental protection and better stakeholder management. This article examines the level of efficiency of the CSR framework in Nigeria; it underscores the developmental potentials of CSR practices within the Nigerian business community. However, a prevailing trend of haphazard and sometimes dodgy CSR practices by free riding rogue companies mars such potentials. Underpinning these dodgy practices has been a CSR ‘business case’ argument coupled with dysfunctional business (corporate) law assumptions among other causative factors. The article appraises the implications of these causative factors and towards minimising the haphazard practices, proposes corporate law reforms through which the Nigerian CSR framework may become more effective.
